Shambhujeet Baskota occupies a distinguished place in the evolution of modern Nepali music. As a music director, composer, singer and lyricist, he has devoted more than five decades to enriching Nepali musical expression and strengthening the creative foundations of the country’s film, television and cultural industries.

Baskota entered the professional music arena in 1971 as a music director and singer. Over the decades, his versatility, technical command and creative sensibility have established an extensive body of work spanning cinema, contemporary music, folk traditions, patriotic compositions, devotional repertoire and commercial sound production.

His contribution to Nepali cinema remains particularly substantial. He has served as music director for more than 364 Nepali feature films and has composed music for over 2,000 songs across diverse genres. His creative portfolio also includes more than 700 radio and television advertising jingles, demonstrating his ability to adapt musical language to both artistic and commercial communication.

Baskota has also played a notable role in the development of Nepali television. He composed the music associated with Nepal Television’s logo and news theme and contributed to the conception, production and direction of several landmark programmes, including Sangeet Sangam, Geetgatha and Manko Rahar. These contributions placed his musical signature within some of the country’s formative broadcast experiences.

His filmography includes acclaimed productions such as Prem Pinda, Seemarekha, Basanti, Rajamati and Seto Bagh, where his compositions and background scores complemented the narrative and cultural character of the films. His work on Gaunthali is particularly notable, involving the creation and direction of music for 59 songs.

Beyond creative production, Baskota has represented Nepal at numerous international cultural and musical forums. His engagements have taken him to India, Malaysia, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Dubai, Qatar, Bangladesh, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia and Myanmar. Through participation in festivals, conferences and cultural programmes, he has helped present Nepali music and artistic traditions to international audiences and has led cultural delegations representing Nepal abroad.

His professional contribution also extends into institutional administration and sectoral development. He has served as Member-Secretary of the Nepal Academy of Music and Drama, Executive Chairman and General Manager of Nepal Television, and Executive Chairman of the Film Development Board, among other responsibilities. These positions reflect his involvement in shaping the institutional environment supporting Nepal’s music, broadcasting and film sectors.

Over a career spanning more than half a century, Baskota has accumulated an extensive list of national and international distinctions. His honours include Prabal Gorkha Dakshin Bahu, Trishakti Patta, Narayan Gopal Music Award, Chhinnalata Award, Toyan Jaisis Award and Yuwa Barsha Award, alongside numerous recognitions from Nepal Television, Hits FM, film organisations and cultural institutions.

His later distinctions include Nepali Sangeet Ratna, Prabal Janasewa Shree, Abhiyan Ratna Shree, Mahaan Sangeetkar, Sangeet Shiromani, Lifetime Achievement recognition in cinema and Kirtimaya Rastradip.

With thousands of compositions, contributions to hundreds of films, landmark television work, institutional service and decades of international cultural representation, Shambhujeet Baskota remains an important figure in Nepal’s musical heritage.
